I am thankful for a cancer diagnosis. Good morning! Hope your Thanksgiving was a great time to connect with family and friends and recount why you are thankful. I am thankful that on March 9th, 2010 I was diagnosed with Stage 4 Lymphoma. Does it sound strange that I am so thankful for receiving a stage 4 cancer diagnosis? It may, but it’s true. Right from the beginning God worked in my heart to see cancer as a blessing and not a curse. The months following that diagnosis were filled with fears, anxieties but HOPE always won out. His promised always proved true. Here are some of the biggest lessons I learned. 1. Perspective. With only God’s help I was able to see a cancer diagnosis as a way to grow in my faith, allow God to love on me and choose to not complain or say, “why me?” Instead…

Breath Of Life Ministries – Haiti I had an amazing experience there. I accompanied Ashley Stills from Breath of Life Ministries to Haiti. One of the things we did on our trip was teach nutrition, prenatal care and fetal development to some expectant Haitian moms.  The thing that stunned me about these moms were that they had almost no education on these topics. It literally brought me to tears when I realized most of the information I was giving them, they had never heard before. They were so hungry for the information we presented. It was such a blessing to see the moms so excited about hearing their baby’s heartbeat and learning about how their baby was growing inside of them. The infant mortality rate in the US is 5 deaths per 1000 births vs. Haiti is 51/1000. The maternal mortality rate in the US is 27 deaths per 100,000 births vs….

This article is not  like the other ones I’ve shared with you so far..i.e.”eat this, don’t eat that”!  I think that there are a lot of things that affect our health besides the food we eat. Our relationships being one of them. Unhealthy relationships can cause stress and worry. Working towards healthy relationships can offer more peace in our life, giving us a positive outlook and a feeling of purpose. Today I decided to focus on the relationship with our kids.  Here are a few things I do to keep the lines of communication open with my kids and continue to grow a healthy relationship with them. 1. The Broken Beautiful I spent last week as the nurse at Bear Lake Camp.   I always look forward to this time because it is like a mini-retreat for me. I can relax from the stresses and pressures of daily life. It is a time I can focus on spending time with God in prayer and with less distractions to clearly hear His voice. Each year as I spend this focused time with God, there’s a theme from Him of what He wants to reveal to me.  This year blew me away. It’s like the same lesson kept hitting me over the head. The words that kept flooding my head was how God is a Redeemer, a Restorer. A friend said she was struggling with losing “the last 10 pounds”. Here is my reply to her..hope it may help anyone else who is struggling with the same problem. Ahhh the last 10 lbs..it’s always the hardest it seems..ok so I will throw some ideas out at you.. I realize you may or may not already be doing some of these but they are what I find most helpful for people. 1. NOOOOOO SODA! Especially NO DIET soda. 2. Avoid artificial sweetners (one reason no diet soda) but also look at things like crystal light etc. they disrupt hormones making it harder to lose weight. 3. Journal/Log EVERYTHING you put in your mouth.. either on paper or on an online site like www.loseit.com or myfitnesspal.com– and share it with someone..(accountability partner) (I use a Shaklee 180 app on my iPhone..every time I log I get entered into a prize drawing for free stuff!) 4. How Important Is Accountability? I am currently reading, Made to Crave: Satisfying Your Deepest Desire with God, Not Food, by Lysa Terkeurust. These are amazing stats from her book on the probability of achieving a goal.. 10% when you hear an idea, 40% when you decide you will do it, 50% when you plan how you will do it, 65% when you commit to someone else you will do it AND 95% when you have an accountability appointment with the person you’ve committed to! Lysa also states, “Establishing accountability means giving up secrecy and taking responsibility for our food choices. But accountability isn’t just about sacrificing; it’s also about gaining some things.
