Have You Put Your Hope In 2013?

As the ball was just about to drop, I was sitting there reflecting.  I was thinking about how people have been wishing 2012 good-bye because of some disappointments, hard times, tragedies, etc.  I found myself doing the same thing.  Why is it that just because the clock strikes midnight and a new year begins do we all of a sudden have this unbelievable faith and hope that 2013 will bring us something great, different or new?  Then I thought you know what, the changing to a new year has nothing to do with how different my life will be.  Putting my hope in a new year is not where I should be putting my hope.   Lamentations 3:22-23 say The faithful love of the LORD never ends! His mercies never cease. Great is his faithfulness; his mercies begin afresh each morning. So this is telling me that I need to put MY HOPE in the LORD.  Every morning I have the opportunity to see change in a new day.

I thought about what this means.  For example, Most people have a goal to lose weight for the new year. Let’s say you do really great until March 1st but then start to backslide, gain back 5 lbs.  Typically what we do is say, oh well, I blew it, I failed. Oh well there is next year and we wait until January 1st 2014 to vow to lose weight again.  Maybe you make a resolution to pay off some debt.  For months you do great chipping away at a credit card debt.  Then July comes by and you give in to temptation and buy that big screen TV- putting it on your credit card.  Again, typically we throw up our hands and say…well next year I will work on my debt…and we wait until January 1, 2014.

Wait! Why do we do this???  I think there could be several reasons why..and that could be another post in itself.  We basically have been tricked into putting our faith in a “New Year” instead of putting our faith in our God who promises mercy, help and hope for a  new day and change, EVERY morning. Another big reason we wait until the New Year is because it takes US out of the equation.  What I mean is I don’t have to take responsibility NOW and do something different about my situation or problem.  A person won’t lose weight NOW if they don’t take action today and make different choices or ask for help.  A person won’t pay off their credit card if they don’t take personal responsibility for their current spending and decrease that or learn a new skill to increase their current income to pay down that debt.  I don’t know why I have never seriously pondered this and put 2 + 2 together like I did on New Years Eve.

So I had to take a long look at MY life, my current issues that I said, “Oh I hope 2013 this (fill in the blank) will be better for me/us”.  Shame on me for buying into that lie and not putting my hope the LORD and then taking action sooner.  The awesome thing is…all I have to do is remember Lamentations… even when I fail, put my hope in the wrong thing, God’s mercies are new for me everyday. I don’t have to stay where I was the day before. I have the awesome promise of His help. I can move forward toward my goals and make steps in the right direction.  So make your goals or your resolutions whatever you call them..but remember that if/when you have a disappointment or set backs along the way you don’t have to quit and wait until January 2014 to do something about it again.  His mercies are new every morning. You can start fresh again.
